Building an Igloo (February 26, 2015)

Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to build an igloo. Either we don't get enough snow, or it's too dry, or I'm out of town. We got about 8" of snow from winter storm Remus and it was a wet snow good for packing. So I decided to finally make an igloo.

The first layer of bricks

Igloo
The fifth layer of bricks. At this point I started curving in for the dome.

Igloo
It's starting to get that igloo shape!

Igloo
The igloo shape got a bit lost, now it looks more like a beehive.

Igloo
I cut a hole to get in.

Igloo
Finished!

Igloo
Me for scale.

Igloo
It felt surprisingly solid, although it's probably one of those things that feels fine right until it caves in.

Igloo
Entering the igloo is a bit awkward.

Igloo
Looking up at the peak from inside.

Igloo
I decided to spend the night in it since we rarely get enough snow to make an igloo and not many people from my state can say they've slept in one. I didn't have any seal skins, so I had to use some bath mats for a door. It got down to 18º outside, but it stayed a relatively balmy 45º inside.

Igloo
All snuggled up inside my sleeping bag watching cat videos on YouTube, just like the Eskimos did thousands of years ago.

Igloo
It was really pretty with the candle light shining through on the outside. My phone's camera doesn't do it justice.

Igloo
The ruins of my poor igloo :( It managed to last nearly four days.

Here's a time-lapse video of building it.
